A recent article on Breitbart’s Big Government site states that “Tea Party favorite and newly-elected Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) took his oath of office today – and immediately moved to take on President Obama’s chief legislative accomplishment, Obamacare. Cruz is the first Hispanic to serve as a Texas Senator… His first bill, Cruz said, would move to strike “every syllable Continue reading

After the tragedy in Newton Connecticut, I had sudden and irrational thoughts about pulling my kids from the very school district where I serve on the school board.

Even knowing all the procedures, safety measures and plan for such crises, the events in Newtown raise Continue reading

Why the Founding Fathers Matter

By Tom DeWeese, President of the American Policy Center

Declaration_independence - CopyIt has become typical in school text books, in public discussions, and in the smug wisdom of Progressives, to diminish the words and actions of those who led the founding of the United States. However, now that the nation has gone through what Al Gore called a “wrenching transformation” away from limited government, free enterprise, and individual liberty (all major ingredients to making the US the freest and most prosperous nation in history) it’s time to listen again to their wisdom. Upfront, I’ll admit that I have long been leery of Reason Magazines Nick Gillespie, a guy I feel comes across, often condescendingly, as believing that everyone other than himself has some questionable, hidden agenda and, of course, everyone else is always wrong. But, his recent postings about 2012 presidential contender Rick Santorum have me wondering if Mr. Gillespie is actually libertarian, Continue reading

“Better to Remain Silent and be Thought a Fool, Than to Speak and Remove all Doubt”

By Alan Sexton, Green Mountain Scribes

"The Thinker"While we might not always agree with the rhetoric or expressions of others, as Americans, our intrinsic right to speak and otherwise express freely is nonetheless protected from governmental censorship within the First Amendment to the painstakingly created, ingenious, and timelessly applicable Constitution of the United States. This begs the question: are we always best served by exercising these rights?

Along with the rapid proliferation and ever-growing popularity of wonderfully interactive media such as Continue reading

Downtown Lincoln

Tom DeWeese

Recently W. Cecil Steward, dean emeritus of the UNL College of Architecture (Lincoln, Nebraska) launched what can only be described as a diatribe against a talk I gave recently in Lincoln. My topic was Sustainable Development and how it is transforming out nation. In his article, Mr. Steward, rather than provide any substance on the issue, prefers instead, to use words designed to paint me as an extremist playing on people’s fear.

Lewis F. Powell, Jr. U.S. Courthouse, Richmond, VA

Richmond, VA–In a decision that reeks of judicial activism and seems more tainted by partisanship than decided upon constitutional merit, a three-judge panel from the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals on Thursday cast aside a previous court ruling and rejected the Commonwealth of Virginia’s efforts to protect its citizens from being forced to comply with the federal PPACA, more commonly known as “Obamacare”. While We’re on the Subject of Job “Creation”…

Alan Sexton/Green Mountain Scribes

United_States_Capitol_-_west_front

So, Mr. Obama is going to give the big job creation speech before Congress on Thursday night. Hmm…

Up front, let’s be clear that it is not the federal governments right or place to “create” private sector jobs. Nor is it the federal government’s right or place to unconstitutionally interfere with the private sector. Continue reading
